School Profile & History

Mission Statement

Jimmy Carter Early College High School is committed to cultivating and shaping the 21st-century leaders of tomorrow through a rigorous yet supportive academic and behavior program to become college-ready, career-ready, and life-ready. Jimmy Carter Early College High School motivates life-long learners to build a legacy of excellence for the student, the family, and the community.

The Early College Model

Early College High School is a bold approach, based on the principle that academic rigor, combined with the opportunity to save time and money, is a powerful motivator for students to work hard and meet serious intellectual challenges. Early College High Schools blend high school and college in a rigorous yet supportive program, compressing the time it takes to complete a high school diploma and the first two years of college.

Early College High Schools enable more students, particularly low-income and minority students, to experience rigorous high school and college coursework that leads to improved outcomes. Early college students are outperforming their peers nationwide:

  • 90% graduate high school vs. 78% of students nationally
  • 94% earn free college credit while in high school
  • 30% earn an Associate's degree or other postsecondary credentials while in high school

School History

In the 2010–2011 academic year, La Joya Independent School District launched the College Transition Academy, designed with the Early College High School model in mind. The Academy welcomed its first freshman cohort and quickly distinguished itself, earning an “Exemplary” rating from the Texas Education Agency in its very first year. After a rigorous application process and a formal partnership with South Texas College, the Texas Education Agency granted the Academy the prestigious Early College High School designation.

With this new status came a new name: Jimmy Carter Early College High School. The choice of President Carter as the namesake was intentional. His lifelong commitment to education, service, and humanitarian work reflected the mission of the Early College model — opening doors for first-generation students, empowering communities, and fostering opportunities through perseverance and equity. Carter’s legacy of leadership and advocacy for equal access to education made him a natural fit to symbolize the school’s values and aspirations.

As La Joya ISD’s flagship Early College High School, Jimmy Carter ECHS paved the way for the district’s future. Inspired by its success, La Joya ISD went on to establish three additional Early College High Schools, each serving specialized student populations. In Fall 2025, these legacies converged when Jimmy Carter ECHS united with La Joya Early College High School, Thelma Salinas STEM Early College High School, and the Academy of Health Science Professions & STEM — creating a consolidated institution built on over a decade of innovation, resilience, and student success.
