To close out CCMR Week, students at Jimmy Carter Early College High School heard powerful stories from Ariana Palomo, Rhodes Scholar and Brown University graduate, and Anevay YbƔƱez, Tufts University graduate and documentary filmmaker.
š¬ āGive yourselves that chance. Push yourself to write those essays and apply, because you are setting up the rest of your life,ā YbƔƱez said.
š¬ āIt can be intimidating to know that you're going into a place that is very different from where you are, but you will always find community,ā Palomo said.

At the July 30, 2025 Board Meeting, La Joya ISD School Board approved a new district policy in alignment with Texas House Bill 1481, which requires school districts across the state to limit the use of personal communication devices during instructional hours.
š± What this means for our students:
Starting with the 2025ā2026 school year, students in Pre-K through 12th grade will not be allowed to use cell phones, smartwatches, earbuds, or similar electronic devices during the school dayāfrom arrival to dismissal.
š Devices can still be brought to school, but they must be:
⢠Turned off before entering the school building
⢠Stored securely, either in backpacks, designated areas, or district-issued locking pouches (depending on grade level)
⢠Left untouched until the end of the instructional day
š Implementation will vary by campus level:
⢠Elementary: Devices stored in backpacks or teacher-designated spaces
⢠Middle & High School: Devices must be stored in district-provided locking pouches
⢠HOPE and College & Career Center: No personal devices allowed on campus
ā ļø Progressive discipline will be used for violations, ranging from verbal warnings to device holds.
This policy is designed to minimize distractions and improve safety across our campuses, ensuring that students stay focused and engaged in learning.
